This question “How to Seal Lead Flashing” is asked so frequently it’s quite amazing? One would imagine in 2010 sealing lead flashing shouldn’t be a problem but obviously it is, hence the question being asked so repeatedly.  When our sales people are in the middle of their demonstration of CT1 and are asked “will that seal lead flashing? As soon as they hear yes they buy it straight away!

We at C-Tec find this surreal as there are so many sealants on the market proclaiming to seal lead flashing. Every time we ask customers who have enquired about a sealant to seal lead flashing what they have used? They reply “we have tried everything but nothing works” is their typical answer.

Lead in its nature is quite difficult to make an adhesion on, this is largely due to the natural oils within the lead and how soft and flexible lead is. The sealant of choice to seal lead flashing appears to be silicone sealant but why does this sealant fail? This is largely due to the reason already outlined but also the silicone sealant contains a large quantity of solvents that evaporate resulting in shrinking. As the lead heats up during the summer it expands quite considerably and the silicone is not strong enough to resist this movement and will break, hardly an effective lead flashing sealant.

Acrylic sealants have similar disadvantages where butyl rubber sealants have the opposite effect, that over a period of time become hard and brittle but with the same consequences. CT1 unique sealant and construction adhesive is the ultimate lead flashing sealant for a number of reasons:-

i           CT1 contains no solvents therefore will never shrink.
ii          CT1 sealant remains flexible and has a 350% elongation that will expand with the lead without breaking

iv         CT1 sealant will resist all types of weather and temperatures from -45°/+120°c
