We at C-Tec, when exhibiting at trade fairs are often asked “Is CT1 good for bonding Glass Blocks?” This question is so frequently asked because the adhesives on the market for bonding Glass Blocks, although they fulfil the task they have been assigned, all have a list of their own disadvantages.

Let’s look at the type of adhesives available for this process. Firstly, a silicone sealant/adhesive which initially looks as if it has provided a good bond but the disadvantages are that the Glass will shrink due to the solvents evaporating from the silicone. The silicone will be too flexible; therefore if a Glass Block wall was created there would be too much movement with the possibility of collapse. In addition the silicone itself would lack strength to achieve a structural bond.

Next is a one component mastic panel adhesive type. The problem with these types is that they are slow to cure and lack total flexibility, so when the Blocks move, the bond will break.

Thirdly, there are two component epoxies which are the most expensive for a task such as Glass Bonding. The epoxy adhesive is a two part adhesive that needs to be mixed. This from being expensive are, difficult to mix – actually if you do not mix the adhesive correctly the adhesive will not work. Also the epoxy is slow to cure and has no flexibility at all.
The best adhesive for doing this is the unique CT1 adhesive and sealant. It is a unique hybrid polymer with exceptional bond strength, at least ten times stronger than one component mastic. It will remain flexible but not too flexible.

Due to CT1’s unique formulation it can be applied on wet surfaces and even underwater. It’s the only adhesive on the market that can create long term underwater structural bonds. When applying an adhesive onto this material it is an advantage to be able to structure or spread the adhesive without it stringing. It can be spread with ease for perfect matching.

Not only is CT1 the best Adhesive, it is also the best sealant available. CT1 can be used for finishing off/grouting the joint. It is advantageous to clean the Glass Blocks before applying CT1. The best solution for this is our C-Tec Multisolve, a safe aliphatic solvent. Multisolve will degrease the Blocks without staining and evaporate 100% leaving no residue. Multisolve is also a great aftercare product for cleaning.
